Steyning Railway Garden

Despite its modest scale, the garden feels rich and layered, with each element carefully positioned to create interest and flow.

A charming, cottage-sized garden designed as a series of intimate, character-filled spaces, blending traditional charm with personal touches from the client’s railway collection. Despite its modest scale, the garden feels rich and layered, with each element carefully positioned to create interest and flow.

A small pond forms a tranquil focal point, edged with natural stone and soft planting to encourage wildlife and add gentle movement and reflection. Surrounding cottage-style plants spill informally around the water, creating a relaxed, established feel.

The garden room sits quietly within the planting, offering a cosy retreat that can be enjoyed year-round. Nearby, a traditional greenhouse adds both function and charm, supporting home-grown plants while reinforcing the garden’s timeless character.

Subtle references to the client’s railway collection are woven throughout the design—such as reclaimed sleepers used as edging, miniature track-inspired detailing in pathways, or discreet displays and sculptures nestled among the planting. These personal elements give the garden a unique narrative without overwhelming its peaceful, cottage atmosphere.

Overall, the garden feels intimate, nostalgic, and thoughtfully curated, combining water, structure, and personal history into a calm and inviting outdoor space.
