Steyning Gravel Garden

A Beth Chatto–inspired gravel garden designed for year-round interest

A Beth Chatto–inspired gravel garden designed for year-round interest, resilience, and natural beauty, where planting is both exuberant and perfectly adapted to its conditions. The garden celebrates a relaxed, informal structure, with free-draining gravel paths and open spaces that allow plants to self-seed and weave together naturally.

In summer, the garden comes alive with vibrant cascades of colour. Drought-tolerant perennials and flowering plants spill generously across the gravel, creating layers of texture and movement. Bold purples, sunny yellows, soft blues, and flashes of pink intermingle, forming a tapestry that feels spontaneous yet carefully composed, alive with pollinators and gentle motion.

As the seasons shift, prairie grasses take the lead. Their upright forms and feathery seed heads bring structure, rhythm, and sound, catching low winter light and frost to create a subtle, sculptural beauty. Evergreens are thoughtfully placed throughout the garden, anchoring the design and providing depth and colour during the colder months.

The result is a garden that feels wild yet intentional, low-maintenance yet richly expressive—offering vivid summer drama, graceful winter structure, and a strong sense of harmony with the natural environment.
